What do you hope to learn from others by attending the event?

Our mission at Bayer is Health for All. Hunger for None.  To further this, the Bayer Pharma Research ambition is to bring meaningful therapies to patients in need and continuously increase the pipeline value with more impactful innovation balanced across value and risk. Strategic Project and Portfolio Management is aiming to improve the output of high quality assets through better portfolio decision making and supported by state-of-the-art portfolio assessment and prioritization tools. In a rapidly changing environment it is not possible that one company or let alone one person has all the best answers. We all need to connect to other professionals in Pharma but also other industries to continuously evolve our thinking.

What is the biggest challenge in portfolio management in a world redefined by Covid 19?

We need to ensure to progress towards our strategic goals in a rapidly evolving environment; what worked in the past will certainly not work anymore in future.  So now more than ever we have to put the right enablers in place to stay successful—an innovation focus combined with speed, flexibility and agility. And our talent, tools, and processes need to be ever-evolving to make this happen.

What are the key ingredients to success in strategic management and modelling in times of uncertainty?

Based on an assessment of future trends and discovery approaches, we have to determine how research needs to evolve and set value-based portfolio strategies. Within this frame we then need to ensure high quality decision making, focus on highest value assets, and cultivation of the capabilities we need in the future. Pressure testing of key elements with external experts and internal stakeholders to gain further insights ensures we were on the right path and allows to adapt where necessary going forward.  Additionally, we need to have the right level of detail—exhibiting the discipline every day to focus on the essential science and value drivers, and stripping out the unnecessary.

What are the main levers for effective forecasting and portfolio decision-making?

Effective portfolio decision making requires incorporation of the right value and risk criteria, transparency on portfolio diversity (e.g. fit to disease area strategies, value/risk profile, maturity) and understanding the output which can be achieved within the available resource frame. Informed by throughput modelling and capability assessments resources can actively be allocated to portfolio priorities, and through best possible resource allocation flexibility we can react to change.
