An Interview with Heather Baker,  Director of Baker Thompson Associates

In a world of uncertainty, we have to be prepared and resilient and make sure that we are able to carry on our duties and responsibilities. It is now more than ever that executive assistants have to be resilient and be the support - their executive needs, when leading through the crisis. Ahead of the Live e-Series: The Exceptional PA, EA, Administrative - CPD Certified and Endorsed by IAM online training course , we spoke to Heather to give you a heads up on what this training will be about. Join our 2-days online programme to get the tools and the skills which offer an innovative, practical and immediately applicable approach for Executive Assistants at all levels who are committed to dramatically improving their individual productivity — without compromising their own personal goals and aspirations.

1. In light of this current challenging situation with Covid 19, how can EAs be of the Highest Value to their Executive(s). Your personal take on this.

EAs are vital to the continuing success of an organisation during this global pandemic. They can assist in holding the teams together if people are working from home, they can support and reassure their managers and they should ensure they are fully conversant with the technology needed to assure business continuity.

2. EAs being the ultimate support to their executives and making sure that everything is under control, what is your advice to EAs in keeping calm and remain productive.

It is important to remember that, although you may have more time to work (when we are not commuting), we may not be as productive because of “lockdown brain fog”. The symptoms most people are experiencing during this crisis are similar to those of grief; don’t set yourself unrealistic targets. “Simply do the first thing”.

3.
What are some technologies available for Assistants to support seamless remote working especially during this time of change?

People are using Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Skype; they are messaging with WhatsApp or Slack… and there are new technologies becoming available as we speak.

4. Having a good healthy relationship with Executives and colleagues is very important to any EAs. Your thoughts on this as how do EAs cultivate good working relationships with their Executives and others while working from home?

Very regular communications and building rapport; all discussed during our training.

5. Can we talk about the "New Norm" and has it affected the EAs much working from home and can they stay motivated while working from home?

We can, but everyone’s “new normal” is different. It is having a huge impact on EAs but, given that an Exceptional Assistant will already be very flexible, they can adapt. Motivation will fluctuate; accept that as a “new normal”.

6. With your extensive experience working with C-Suites and also working around the globe facilitating Professional EA courses, do you have any advice for the EAs and PAs especially now during the challenging times.

Above all, take care of your mental health; take breaks, get exercise, eat well and remember, everyone is feeling vulnerable.

7. What do you want delegates to take away from your sessions?

Techniques and skills that work for them in their situations; it won’t be the same for everyone. I want attendees to feel more confident and to fully understand how vital they are for the success of their organisation.
