Driving Net-Zero Industry Transformation: From Plan to Action

Building an end-to-end sustainable strategy, advancing innovation and accelerating operative models transition to carbon neutrality

What are the key challenges and drivers your company is having in this transition with the end-goal of net zero operations?

How do we do this in a “just” manner? How do we grow quickly enough into renewables while also creating benefits for the local impacted communities? Everyone is in favour of more wind and solar until the park is planned right next to their home. And how do we accelerate decarbonization while also keeping electricity and heat affordable? The recent energy crisis resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has brought the affordability topic into stark relief. Finding this balance between speed, affordability, and impact/inclusion is key.

How valuable are partnerships and how should the industry utilize collaboration to tackle the common challenges in this transition?

Fundamental. No single company can transition alone. One great example of the power of collaboration is with fossil-free steel. A study came out and showed that even if the cost of fossil-free steel were significantly higher than its standard competitor, the overall effect on the price of a €30,000 car would be €300-600, or 1-2%. The purchasers of the steel to manufacture the individual parts would never take the upfront costhit and thus the steel would never get produced, but if you collaborate across the value chain, it’s much easier to distribute the costs fairly and increase demand for such products, thus enabling the technology to develop more quickly.

How do you currently see the situation of sustainability in the operations department in the industry?

It’s increasingly being integrated into core operational KPIs, strategies, and decision-making processes. Whereas in the past, operational strategy was set and you tried to make the results as sustainable as possible, now sustainability aspects, particularly emissions, are driving operational steering.

To what extent does the current approach to sustainability affect your company and targets that are set for the future of your operations?

With a vision to “enable fossil-free living within one generation”, sustainability and particularly the climate aspect are really the guiding light for our company. Every decision gets scrutinized for whether it will get us closer to this goal or not.

What, for you, are the benefits of attending a conference like this and what can attendees expect to learn from your session?

A lot of very smart, driven people are working in companies that face similar or related challenges to ours, and conferences like this allow these people to highlight the work they’ve done and lessons they’ve learned, and the audience gets to benefit from these experiences. In sharing my experiences, I hope the audience will be able to get inspiration for things we’ve done that they can bring back to their companies.

Case Study: Designing viable roadmap and timelines for transforming operations

  • Create an actionable plan and milestones that enable the transformation
  • Build the key stage to reducing Scope 1,2 emissions as a priority action
  • Set near, medium and long-term emission reduction targets to remove carbon from company's value chain
  • Develop an operational performance indicators strategy to track progress
