An Interview with Sam Psota, Senior User Experience Designer, at Roche Diagnostics

Born and raised in Switzerland, Sam has a background in Software Engineering and a Masters degree in Human Interaction Design. He has been working in Usability Engineering for Medical Devices for the past 7.5 years, of which the last 4.5 years have been leading all Usability / UX efforts as a team of one at Roche Tissue Diagnostics in Tucson, AZ. In this time, Sam had the pleasure of working on diagnostic device systems, software systems and in next gen strategy projects.

You will be presenting on “Maximizing Modern User Experience Design Methods to Improve Overall Design Development,” what are some key takeaways the attendees can expect from your session?

What I would like to highlight in the presentation are a few methods we have used to help project teams focus on the user experience from the start of the project. These methods go beyond what I have typically seen being used in Human Factors engineering and are borrowed from UX design and Design Thinking processes.
What attendees can expect from this presentation is to hear a few experiences and examples of methods that are especially well suited to visualize user needs and design concepts in order to gain a common understanding and create consensus with users and stakeholders. It is also a reminder for everyone to look beyond the methods we know and to borrow knowledge from other engineering and design disciplines.

How can highlighting different design methods help improve overall design development?

Different design and research methods are tools to be used for different things. I have found that every product design and development project is a little different because the people running those programs are different. With that challenge it is up to us to find the best methods, and deliverables coming from using those methods, to help the whole development  team understand the user needs and how to make the product safe and easy to use.

Why is it important to integrate early prototyping?

You just learn so much from prototyping. The challenge is to not overdo it and use the right type of prototype to answer the questions you're looking for. There is a lot you can find out with hand drawn sketches or cardboard mock ups and there is also a lot you can find out with a fully interactive prototype. Which one will help you answer the questions and get the feedback you need is really for you to find out. And there are definitely a lot of questions that can only be answered by trying things and having others actually use something rather than analyzing it on paper.

In your experience, which tactics worked best when framing experiential story boarding?

Creating a storyboard is all about finding gaps in your understanding of the workflow and getting consensus with users and stakeholders. It's a very iterative process where you might use textual use scenarios and just lists of user needs at the beginning and then, as you learn more, iterate a few times to get to the workflow storyboard representing the product you need to build. Along the way, it is crucial to work with all the functions involved and to keep everyone aligned. That is also where the strength of the storyboards lie, in the way to visualize the workflow and create alignment in a team.

What key drivers motivated you to participate at this particular conference? What is the one factor you hope to gain from this forum?

What I love about this conference in particular is the exchange with other participants and speakers. There is a breadth and width of knowledge at this conference from all different types of medical device development backgrounds. It's super interesting to learn about the different challenges, tools and methods from peers.

Sam is one of our many expert speakers!

Maximizing Modern User Experience Design Methods to Improve Overall Design Development

•Highlighting different design methods to be able to vividly describe to potential users without having to invest a lot
•Optimizing different methods of design (scenarios, story board, early prototyping) that best fit to gain executive buy-opts for new types of experiences and or technology
•Evaluating tactics to frame experiential story boarding in order to set up the overall story arc to ensure there isn’t too much integrated that would affect efficiency
•Integrating early prototyping in order to gain insight on what to achieve with the intended audience
