Functional outsourcing is a growing trend in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. There is a transition from the full-service outsourcing model to one that focuses on specific operational and technical competencies being outsourced to functional experts. If managed effectively, functional outsourcing creates potential for cost savings, efficiency gains, flexibility of resources and the infrastructure for scalability. The success of this approach is highly dependent on evolving models that meet the ever-changing needs of the industry, and collaborative alignment in strategy and goals between the vendor and the client. Current challenges facing many companies in the industry include how to effectively manage complex sample logistics and provide oversight for an ever increasing number of highly specialized assays and laboratories.
